Coach Baker's '09 Season Opening Note
Lightweight Alumni, Parents, and Friends,
As I write you this email, the Naval Academy Lightweight Rowing Team is less than 48 hours away from opening our spring season. I feel like I should pause for a moment for all of you former rowers and coxswains to think back to the ‘glory’ days of your youth and the many miles that you spent on the Severn River. Ok, enough about the past, let’s talk about the present!
Our lightweight team kicks off its 2009 season this weekend against Yale University in the sixth running of the Eads Johnson Jr. Cup. The race will take place on Saturday afternoon on Lake Carnegie in Princeton NJ. The races are slated to start at 1330, with the varsity race to conclude the afternoon at 1450. If you are in area, please come out to cheer on the guys as we race Yale.
Renovation of Hubbard Hall

Last week, the Navy awarded a nearly $14 million contract for the renovation of Hubbard Hall. Federally appropriated funds will provide redesigned and expanded locker rooms for all three Navy Crew programs (heavies, lightweights, women), more efficiently engineered boat storage areas, training rooms, and a state-of-the-art rowing tank for off-water training. Preparations for the project will start immediately, with actual work on the building scheduled to commence in early summer. The project is expected to take 12-18 months, and when complete, Navy’s boathouse will rival those of the other elite rowing programs in the nation.

5/3/2008 - Collegiate Rowing Polls and This Weekend's Racing
Folks...
While the Navy LWs and Yale HWs will train on their home courses, all other squads will find competition on the road this weekend with exciting racing, traditional rivalries and lots of classic silver at stake.
* On the Charles River in Cambridge #1 and undefeated Yale LW 1V will face #2 and once defeated {by Navy in the Joe Murtaugh Cup} #2 Princeton and #8 Harvard in competition for the oldest trophy in LW rowing -- the Vincent Bowditch Goldthwait Cup {1918}. Yale last won in 2006, with Harvard winning four of the last five HYP contests. Princeton's last 1V victory came in 1999. The Bulldog, Tiger and Crimson squads will also compete overall for the David H. Vogel Cup. Yale last won in 2006, with Harvard winning three of the last five Vogel Cups. Yale won the initial competition in 2003. Dave Vogel and Tom Weil will be at the race, so we will look forward to on-site insight.
4/29/2008 - What the scribes are saying ...
Folks...
A small mid week dose of what the student papers are saying about last week's racing.
- From Yale Daily News - "Lightweights still flawless after sweep of Dartmouth" - Durand
- From The Dartmouth - "Lightweights split weekend races with win over Columbia"
- From The Harvard Crimson - "Navy Uses Depth to Down All Six Crimson Boats" - Haines Trophy
Speaking of the Dartmouth LW 1V's 5/100th of a second victory over Harvard in the Biglin Bowl, Coach Steve Perry offered the following:
Navy Women Win Twice and Tie for Team Honors at Patriot League Championships
Folks...
Navy W won the 2V and V4+ at the Patriot League Championships today on the Cooper River and tied Bucknell for the team trophy. However with a decisive open-water (15 second) victory in the 1V over the Mids, Bucknell won the tie-breaker and took home the silver. In challenge racing, the Mids also won the Novice 8+ and 2V4+. Navy's varsity boat will travel to Seattle this coming weekend to take part in the Winderemere Cup/Opening Day Regatta.
{See details and times below}.
GO BLUE!
Cheers!
Best regards,
Coach and TB406
