Men's Lightweight 8+:
Navy finished third overall [15:37.129] and second among collegiate eights. NYAC, nearly all of the 2009 World Championships silver medalists, finished first among 21 entries, only 8.8 seconds in front of the Mids after 3 miles. Princeton rowed the fastest time of the event [15:22.725], but finished second after a 10 second buoy violation.
Yale LWs finished sixth [15:55.939], trailing Georgetown and Cornell. Harvard posted a finishing time of 15:36.07, good enough for third place, but were penalized a full minute for course violations, adjusting their final result to 18th. The Yale lightweights also had a second entry in the Lightweight Eights comprised of only freshmen. The boat moved up one position from its starting sport and finished with a time of 16:38.716.

10/5/2009 Navy LWs show depth and speed at Poughkeepsie Regatta and at Occoquan Challenge
Folks...
It was a good opening weekend for the Navy LWs with a win over four miles on the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, NY and strong performances in the Occoquan Challenge in Fairfax, VA.
On Saturday, tradition was revisited on the Hudson River with a re-row of four miles of the Poughkeepsie Regatta {forerunner of The Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta} that was held here from 1895 to 1949. The Poughkeepsie Regatta also provides an experience that is quite possibly unlike any other that the crews will encounter this season. While most fall races are usually head-style races against the clock, this race will be a side-by-side competition for four miles on a straight stretch of the river.
Navy LW Coach Steve Perry, reported the following on www.NavyLites.org:
10/2/2009 Navy LWs - Row at Poughkeepsie Regatta - Saturday, Occoquan Challenge - Sunday

The varsity squad from Columbia University competes in the Poughkeepsie Regatta in 1896. Columbia College Dean, John Howard VanAmringe, Columbia Class of 1860, was Commodore of the Columbia Boat Club at the time -- unlikely that he was in the boat -- do the math...
Folks...
Fall racing begins for the Blue Crews this weekend. Coach Steve Perry will lead the Navy LWs to his inaugural regatta as Head Coach as tradition returns to the Hudson River and a re-row of four miles of the Poughkeepsie Regatta {forerunner of The Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta} that was held here from 1895 to 1949.
For more than 50 years, the Poughkeepsie Regatta was one of the biggest sporting events in the United States.
On Saturday, the tradition will be revisited on the Hudson River.

5/12/2009 - Comments on the Sprints - IRA Selection Update
Folks...
Following we have assembled a number of comments and quotes on the EARC Sprints. On site reporting from Tom Weil. Comments from Blue Crew Coaches - Andy Card, Nick Baker and Rick Clothier. Comments from Brown Coach Paul Cooke -- make sure you see the remarks on the depth of the Bruno squad as well as the fact that the 1V boatings were not finalized until Thursday! The entirety of a well written article from the Boston Globe. From the Daily Princetonian, good reporting on the LW 1V and 2V. Just for perspective of achieving "gold" from Columbia Sports.
Row2k featured a video of the 2009 Eastern Sprints V8 HW Grand Final. You can check it out here:

You can get a good feel for the windy conditions and there were some interesting comments about steering by Harvard in lane 2.
Sorry, Luke. I checked the usual sources and there were not any quotable comments from Cambridge.

5/10/2009 - EARC Finals and off to the IRA for Some
Folks...
In the HW division the early speculation was that this would be the day for the Badgers, but it ended with a sweep for the Brown Bruins in the HW 1V, 2V, and 1F taking the Rowe Cup in a dominant fashion.
Among the LWs it was once again very competitive with the Princeton 1V leading wire to wire. Yale took gold in the 2V and Cornell was first in the 1F. With medals in all three events -- silver, bronze and silver -- Harvard claimed the Jope Cup by 2 points over Princeton and Yale.
Winds lessened a bit in the afternoon, but there still were strong gusts with the middle 1,000 meters in the outside lanes still treacherous. Higher seeded crews from the morning heats had the advantage of the inside lanes and lee shore.
5/6/2009 Weekend Rowing and Off to the Sprints
Folks...
While most of the Blue Squads were training for upcoming EARC and EAWRC Sprints, two crews wrapped up their regular season with defeats and loss of "silver".
Navy HWs managed only one win in the 1F, while dropping the remaining two races 1V, and 2V. It rained on Lake Carnegie, but as George Pocock said -- rain is good - knocks down the hills and fills in the valleys -- so conditions were fair and good. With the 1V loss to Columbia, the Maxwell Stevenson Trophy will be retained by the Light Blue Lions.

4/25/2009 NavyLites 74-78 Alumni Row
Here's Luke's video compilation of the Navy Lites 74-78 Weekend '09. The NavyLites 74-78 are already looking forward to the next full reunion in 2012 in the newly restored "former *N* room" of Hubbard Hall. Thanks to our expert cameraman Christopher and to the magic of the steadycam FX feature of Final Cut Pro, here it is . .
The coxswain's handling of a boat full of guys that once were "the Toasts of the Severn" but have pulled oars rarely in the 33 to 35 years since we left Mother Hubbard, was excellent. Luke doesn't recall the final tally of jobs we held in the Navy but "roughly you had several Navy Captains, one Aircraft Carrier CO, one P-3 Wing Commander, a Submarine Skipper, couple of Navy Nuclear Engineers, the son of a Medal of Honor winner, the great nephew of Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, a US National Team stroke, and a modest Airline Captain who also is arguably the best bowman to ever grace the bowseat" LDM'76. Big thanks to Luke Memminger '76 for putting thiis show together.
For those who can't get enough there is the longer raw-footage version of the alumni row.

4/25/2009 Callow Cup Races
Video will not load until you click on the video image These are BIG files and can take some to load before the movie starts, depending on your download speed..
It would have been nice to have watched the races from a YP with the sun to our backs. Shooting into the sun & fog makes for a pretty blind image. It also would have helped to have the tripod head arm attached. Best part might be the sound track!
Go Navy Lites!!
