the Navy Crew Excellence Fund
The Navy Crew Excellence Fund initiative is being pursued to ensure that all three Navy Crew programs have the equipment and resources needed to be competitive with other elite college crew programs. The program’s ability to maintain top-of-line equipment is critical to attracting today’s talented high school crew athletes to the Naval Academy.
The athletic program at the Naval Academy has experienced explosive growth over the last two decades – today, there are over 40 varsity and club programs. Given the large range of programs that NAAA has to spread resources across, the revenue available to Navy Crew from appropriated and non-appropriated NAAA sources cannot be counted on to meet the three crew teams’ equipment-related needs in a timely fashion.
Goal of the effort is to grow the existing Navy Crew Excellence Fund to a minimum level of $2.5 million. Since the fund already has ~$500,000 in it, all alumni who rowed Navy Crew are being asked to help add $2 million. Once the fund reaches $2.5M, careful investment/stewardship will yield annual resources that will be adequate to replace three eight-oared rowing shells per year.
The Academy is doing its part in going “above and beyond” for Navy Crew. A $15M renovation of Hubbard Hall is set to begin this summer. The renovation will include redesigned/expanded locker rooms for all three programs, efficiently designed boat storage areas, training rooms, and a state-of-the-art rowing tank.
